Take Bag Lady To A Whole New Level

Filed under: Savvy Household — admin at 7:41 pm on Monday, August 11, 2008

Jodene, who commented “I bring my own bags to the grocery store and now, this past week actually, I bring them to all the stores including the mall.  It’s a bit hard to remember all the time but I am getting much better at it,” is the winner. Thanks to everyone who entered.

These hip organic totes from SKN with mod fruit and vegetable prints are great for shopping trips, library runs, and any type you want to ditch that oh so yesterday plastic shopping bag habit.

I’ve got the SKN bag in the lemon design and love it. They’ve gotten a lot of media buzz, having been featured, among other places, in Health and Town and Country magazines as well as on trend watching blogs such as She FInds, Mom Finds, Style.com, The Eco Modernist (and of course Savvy Housewife!)

SKN bags are:

  • 12″wide x 16″high x 6″deep
  • Made of 100% sturdy unbleached cotton
  • Are gusseted, fold flat, and hold up to 40 lbs.
  • Machine washable on cold (drip dry)

For every order you place, SKN will plant a tree through American Forests. Founded in 1875, American Forests is the United States’ oldest non-profit citizen’s conservation organization. They are a world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration, a pioneer in the science and practice of urban forestry, and a primary communicator in the benefits of trees and forests.

Here’s your chance to win a great organic designer reusable tote from SKN. Simply leave a comment on this post telling me one step you’ve made to be eco-friendly. For two chances, leave a comment and subcribe to the Savvy Housewife RSS Feed. Savvy Housewife will select a random winner from all eligible comments left by midnight Monday, August 18.

I have been trying to phase out plastic and brown bags for various reusable grocery totes, but I get a lot of groceries, so I am always in need of more. This would help a lot towards that goal.

I also recycle all of our soda cans and soup cans, etc. We don’t really have a recycling center for paper or plastics that I know of, but I hope to get that started as well.

I have always recycled bottles, cans, paper, etc but I have just started taking the plastic grocery bags back to the store; some to re-use and some just to recycle. I like the fact that this bag is cotton and washable - I do not want to put my milk cartons in a bag that is not washable!

We have recycled for years but my goal now is to completely stop using those plastic bags from the grocery store (I still like them for trash liners). We have switched out all of our lightbulbs. We even got rid of the extra car and only have one now (that was a BIG change for us!). Thanks for the chance to win your great giveaway!

Recycle, compost and shop at local farmer’s market for produce. In general try to make reduce, reuse and recycle a part of everyday life.

I have tried to be eco friendly by using totes to bring my groceries home. But sometimes the food is wet and in the case of meat might drip so the bagger puts it in a plastic bag. More plastic!!! I wish someone would come up with a tote that is lined and can be washed out with a cloth.
I always need more totes. Please enter me. Thanks.

We have even started to pick up cans on our evening walks.

Really cutting down on buying bottled water. Even though we recycle our bottles and cans, we have really tried to stick with filtered tap water put in reusable water bottles instead.

I take my plastic bags to the local library where others can reuse them to carry checked out items home. This helps keep bags from going to landfills and protects books from the frequent rain we have here in the northwest.

Natural cleansers like vinegar and baking soda do a great job without harming the planet. I use reusable grocery bags, recycle and compost and try to conserve gas by driving “smart” and driving much less.

I’ve replaced all my light bulbs with the low voltage ones and they are just as good as the old ones and I think they last longer. I’ve been taking my own shopping bags to the store, lately, too, and I’m trying to recyle a lot more, so I have less garbage.
