Trim It, Trim It Good

Artemis Woman sent me a Personal Groomer Precision Hair Trimmer to try out. Seeing as I don’t indulge in any type of Brazilian waxes or other adventures in hair removal, I thought it would be great to add to my beauty arsenal to attack stray hairs.

I like it because it’s sleek and compact (it actually looks like an ink pen in a silver case). It helps gently remove and trim unwanted hair from your face, bikini line, and arms, and includes a two-sided shaping comb that is perfect for shaping up your eyebrows.

Fortunately I am blessed with the tame eyebrow gene, and I’ve only had my eyebrows professionally shaped once. I was pregnant and I suppose I figured if I could endure the pain of childbirth, I could endure some stranger ripping my stray eyebrow hairs out of my head with one expert rip of an adhesive strip.

Artemis products are created by women for women. Founders Ann Buivid and Lisa Kable left their corporate careers to found the company when they found they shared a passion for health and wellness products and empowering women. Artemis Woman donated 2% of its profits to suport alternative treatments and screenings for women’s cancers.

Artemis Woman carries an entire line of home spa beauty tools, such as this great Shea Butter Paraffin Spa with lavender aromatherapy for hands and Double Curl Gentle Heat Lash Curler (hey, I’ve been warming up my eyelash curler with my hair dryer for years!)

Attention all you fitness mamas out there. It may be the end of summer and pool days may be coming to a close as Labor Day weekend approaches, but I always find I get a renewed motivation to work out when cooler weather arrives, the kids are in school and I can carve out a little time for myself at the gym, or just to take a walk in my neighborhood.

Finally there is a new protein powder product on the market specifically made for women.

Tight Curves protein powder, along with proper nutrition and exercise, will:

  • Support low carb diets
  • Facilitate muscle toning
  • Accelerate fat loss
  • Reduce water retention
  • Increase endurance
  • Increase bone density
  • Elevate mood
  • Improve, hair, skin and nails

Tight Curves™ is formulated especially for women. The berry flavored protein powder contains only natural ingredients of the highest quality—soy protein, PeptoPro amino acids, calcium, Black Cohosh, and St. John’s Wort—all scientifically proven to deliver the benefits that women seek. These include enhanced weight control, muscle tone, bone density, mood, endurance, and recovery. Simply add one scoop to 6 to 8 oz. of water or your favorite beverage.

Let’s face it, there is an overwhelming number of supplements, vitamins, minerals and compounds on the market to choose from and unless you’re a celebrity mama like Kelly Ripa or Madonna, you probably don’t have access to personal trainers or chefs or wellness gurus. Tight Curves brought together a team of experts and, based upon research, developed a formula that meets the most common needs active women seek as they develop their workout routine and goals.

Get trim, get toned, lose weight, and improve your mood with Tight Curves.

Microdermx Brings Spa Quality Microdermabrasion Home

Filed under: Savvy Beauty and Wellness — admin at 9:07 pm on Monday, July 28, 2008

Do you want a salon quality microdermobrasion experience at home, without the price?

Microdermx from Nikkel Holistic Skincare is a new in-home microdermabrasion kit that uses medical grade corundum crystals to help even skin tone, diminish pores, and fade wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars and brown spots without the use of synthetic or chemical ingredients.

It’s a safe, effective, and affordable alternative to the microdermabrasion treatments received from a doctor’s office or salon.

The high grade crystals used in Microdermx are suspended in a base free of synthetic or petrol chemical additives such as parabens, mineral oil, or propylene glycol. They also have concentrated amounts of natural botanicals, nutrients, and active enzymes, unlike most of the second-grade exfoliants found in other home formulas.

The Microdermx process involves two steps. Step One is the microdermabrasion process which removes older, tired skin cells to reveal new, more supple ones. Step Two takes the treatment further as it nourishes the skin with hydrating “skin food” You get 15 to 18 treatments from each 2.1 oz jar of Microdermx, which retail for $79 as a two-step kit. It’s safe for all types of skin, even sensitive skin, as well as textures and colors.

My mom tried out the Microdermx system samples and loved them. She noticed a difference in the texture of her skin after one treatment! If you’re looking for a spa quality microdermabrasion results, without the price tag, then Microdermx is for you. If you’re Amy Winehouse, than nothing is going to help your skin at this point.

Aveeno Active Naturals Moisturizer Provides Daily Protection

Filed under: Savvy Beauty and Wellness — admin at 9:51 am on Tuesday, July 1, 2008

Last weekend Savvy Dad and I took our girls to a friend’s pool. I was taking our 6-year-old to the bathroom for what seemed like the 800th time and saw something on a table that stopped me in my chlorinated tracks: a bottle of baby oil and iodine. Instantly I was transported to 1984, my freshman year of high school, to a summer spent laying out on the roof of my dad’s houseboat with my best friend in a quest for the perfect tan.

I’m on the cusp of 40 (OK, next August), and much more careful with my skin these days. No more suntain oil for me. Sun damage can happen any time, anywhere, and accumulates over time, so it’s important to protect against both aging UVA and burning UVB rays. But you’re not golfing or hitting the pool or tennis courts on a weekly basis, you say? No matter. You are exposed to these rays even when driving your car. 80 percent of your lifetime sun exposure comes from daily activities.

Aveeno is one of my favorite skincare brands (I loved their baby care line for Miss A) and I have been trying out their daily body lotion with SPF 15. Some features of the new Aveeno Active Naturals Daily moisturizing lotion with sunscreen:

  • Active Photobarrier Complex™ SPF 15 with soothing Natural Colloidal Oatmeal
  • UVA/UVB protection
  • Clinically shown to moisturize for 24 hours
  • Non-greasy
  • Dermatologist recommended

Aveeno’s new Active Naturals daily moisturizing lotion with sunscreen is available at most nationwide retailers, including CVS and Walgreens.

Visit Aveeno’s website to sign up for a $1.50 coupon for Aveeno facial care products as well as a free sample of their Positiviely Ageless Lifting and Firming Night Cream.

Are you diligent about using sunscreen? And do you remember the baby oil and iodine craze?

TruKid Makes Bathtime Fun, And Safe

Filed under: Savvy Beauty and Wellness, Savvy Child — admin at 2:14 pm on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

TruKid, a wonderful natural and organic hair and skin care line for kids with fun names like Silly Shampoo and Dancing Detangler, sent me several of their products to try on my girls, ages 3 and 6.

Made from natural ingredients and essential oils, TruKid products are safe, non-toxic and paraben, SLS, and phthalate free. The line includes sunscreen, soaps, moisturizers, face and body wash, shampoos, lip balms, and even an on-the-go “Hero Stick” to help heal cuts and boo boos.

The girls and I love the Silly Shampoo, Cool Conditioner, and Dancing Detangler, which retail for $10. All three products have a very light citrus scent which reminded me of grapefruit. Another hit at our house was the Spiffy Spearmint Lip Balm. We took the Sunny Days SPF 30 face stick to the pool and it was a great alternative to the lotions I try to lather on two reluctant and squirmy little girls who are anxious to jump in the water. The Healthy Habits Hair Care Travel Set or the Healthy Habits Travel Set (both retail for $16) are great gift ideas.

TruKid is offering Savvy Housewife readers 20% off online purchases of $25 or more now through September 13. Just use the code blonde at checkout.

Study results published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, concluded that parents who want to reduce their infants’ exposure to phthalates–man-made chemicals used during the manufacturing process of lubricants, cosmetics and plastic products including children’s toys — should limit use of infant lotions and powders. Phthalates have been linked to reproductive problems. Read an AP article on MSNBC about the study.

GO3 Omega-3 Vitamin Giveaway

Filed under: Savvy Beauty and Wellness — admin at 11:33 am on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

EG at Stuff Growing, Joni at Enjoy Every Minute, and Ginny at Mom of Two Dancers are the winners of the GO3 Omega-3 Vitamin Giveaway. EG had me at: “I would like David Beckham. Thanks. Nevermind, I don’t want Posh’s seconds. Congrats EG, Joni, and Ginny and thanks for entering!

Omega-3 EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids found mainly in oily fish, but according to the American Dietetic Association, most Americans are not eating the recommended two portions of fatty fish a week we need.

GO3 Omega-3 vitamins contain Omega-3, as well as Vitamins A,D, and E and are endorsed by none other than international soccer star David Beckham. They also make chewable Vitamin Kicks that come in orange, strawberry, and lemon flavors. I’ve been taking the adult variety and Miss C has been taking the chewable strawberry fish oil capsules (and I’m happy to report she takes her soccer vitamins, as she calls them, with ease.) We grill a lot of fish in the spring and summer and eat quite a bit of salmon, but I know we’re not getting enough on a regular basis. GO3 Omega-3 vitamins are also sugar free, with no artificial coloring.

From the GO3 website:

Studies suggest Omega-3 contributes to brain and nerve cells and can aid proper brain, eye, and central nervous system development in young children. Results from a 2005 study howed that more than 40% of children significantly improving their reading and spelling abilities after regular doses of Omega-3. Adults can also benefit from Omega-3 as it helps maintain a healthy heart and circulation, as well as proper joint function. It can help protect and improve your skin, even helping sunburn and complaints such as eczema. And it can help prevent mood swings, stress and tension.

Savvy Housewife is giving away two packs of GO3 Omega-3 vitamins (one adult pack and one junior strawberry chewable pack/total retail value $38.90) to three readers! Visit the GO3 website and then come back and leave a comment telling which of their vitamin products you prefer. A random winner will be chosen from all eligible comments (U.S. residents only) left by midnight Saturday, May 31.
