Have A Savvy July 4th

The Fourth of July is nearly here and we will probably be hunkered down at our neighbor’s house tomorrow night watching fireworks and then coming home to one very freaked out old dog. The hubby has already broken out the smoke bombs and bottle rockets.

Here are some festive links for you.

I love the idea of these red, white, and blue fruit kabobs from The Frugal Girls!

Safe Shredding In The Home Office

My husband is a small business owner and I work from home on Fridays for my job as an editor at a business publishing company so we use our home office quite a bit. We live in a ranch style house built in 1968 and what was once the two-car garage is a finished area that serves as our office, as well as a place to store a lot of the girls’ toys. One of these days my husband will have a man cave! Any way, we do a lot of paper shredding and it always made me a little uneasy to have a paper shredder when the girls were toddlers.

June was Home Office Safety Month and with more people telecommuting (and many of them parents with small children), Fellowes, which is a manufacturer of paper shredders, and the Home Safety Council released some helpful tips for preventing home office injury:

  • Keep your work space off-limits to children unless supervised by an adult.
  • If you have an entire room devoted to your home office, consider installing a door lock and keeping it locked when not in use.
  • When purchasing a paper shredder, look for one with safety features to protect children and large pets from injury.
  • Unplug shredders and other office equipment when not in use.
  • Keep scissors, letters openers and all sharp office supplies in a drawer and out of harm’s reach.
  • Install safety covers in unused electrical outlets.
  • Make sure all electrical cords are not cracked or worn and in good condition.
  • Look for certification labels from an independent testing laboratory such as ETL or UL when using extension cords, power strips and surge protectors or other electronic equipment.
  • Store printers and ink cartridges in a high cabinet out of a child’s reach.

Fellowes sent me one of their newest paper shredders, the Intellishred PS-79Ci, to test and keep. The PS-79Ci features SafeSense, an electronic sensor that surrounds the shredder’s paper opening and shuts down the shredder immediately when it comes in contact with the energy field created by humans or large pets. If you have small children or pets in your house who like to nose their way around your belongings and you work from home, this is a huge plus. This shredder also shreds very quietly and is capable of some heavy duty shredding as it will shred CDs and credit cards. It’s a cross-cut shredder that also safely shreds paperclips and staples.

Don’t Lose It, Label It

With one daughter about to enter 2nd grade and one enrolled in full-time daycare, I am always writing a name on something. Recently I even wrote our new daycare door lock code on my hand. Yes, I am that organized!

Old World Charm For The Young And Young At Heart

We recently returned from summer vacation in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. We had vacationed in the area several years ago, pre-kids, but this was the first time we’d traveled with our daughters, as well as the first time they’d seen the Atlantic Ocean. It was also the first time our youngest Miss A, who is 4, had flown and only the second time Miss C, 7, had flown so it was quite an adventure for them. The Jacksonville International Airport is about a 45-minute drive from St. Augustine and lucky for us it was an easy direct flight from Nashville.

We stayed at the beautiful Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village, centrally located between old town St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. One of the hotel amenities we really liked was the fact that a full breakfast buffet, which offered everything from bagels to a full omelette station and fresh fruit to Lucky Charms and my girls’ personal favorite chocolate chip muffins, is included with most of the hotel packages. There’s a small, but nice, hotel pool as well as a hot tub and the girls loved hunting for tiny lizards by the hotel playground.

The Renaissance, which recently underwent a $10 million renovation, is a 15-minute drive to St. Augustine’s quaint streets and magnificent sites, such as the impressive Castillo de san Marcos in St. Augustine, which my girls referred to excitedly as “the castle!” The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is part of the National Park Service and was begun in 1672 and completed by 1695. It’s the oldest masonry fort and best-preserved example of a Spanish colonial fortification in the continental United States. Many of the employees at the Castillo are dressed in period costume to just add to the historical charm.

St. Augustine has undeniable coastal charm, but it’s the charming Old World history that really makes it unique. One of the first things we did on our first full day stroll down St. George Street and browse all the unique shops, soaking in the sights and sounds. We enjoyed lunch at the Florida Cracker Cafe and after having some amazing conch fritters we spent the afternoon riding a sightseeing train. This ended up being an adventure in and of itself as we got caught in a thunderstorm. The beauty of being on the Florida coast, however, is that the storm was short-lived and made for a cool evening for walking through old town. After a quick trip back to our hotel for a change of dry clothes we headed to Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum. The girls loved all of the odd, fascinating, and downright head-spinning exhibits (you exit through a swirling hallway which gives the illusion of spinning.) Once our minds quit reeling from Ripley’s we walked down the sidewalk on A1A for dinner at A1A Aleworks, which has a great outdoor seating area which overlooks the St. John’s and A1A, that stretch of highway that hugs the Florida coast that Jimmy Buffett mentions in so many songs.

We are huge beach lovers so we made sure we spent several afternoons exploring local beaches. Anastasia State Park has a lovely beach. Island Joe’s at the park is a small convenience store that also sells drinks and snacks (we tried the incredible sweet potato fries with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on them for a healthier twist on french fries.) We saw dolphins in the distance, searched for shells, and dug in the sand. We also drove south of Ponte Vedra to beautiful Vilano Beach in Ponte Vedra, or the “golden beach” as we nicknamed it.

Although we’re not big golfers, our girls truly enjoyed touring the World Golf Hall of Fame, especially the golf simulator at the end of the tour. We had to practically drag the 7-year-old from the simulator. There’s even an IMAX Theater on the property and we ate dinner one evening at the Murray Brothers (as in Bill) Caddyshack restaurant. I missed out on checking the PGA Tour Spa but that just gives me a reason to go back.

marineland

Beautiful vista just outside Marineland (we are about 20 feet up from the beach.)

There were plenty of encounters with ocean life and other creatures on our trip. On several occasions we saw dolphins swimming in the Atlantic and on a walk out on Jacksonville Beach Pier we saw surfers dodging rays and a fisherman catch a “cuda” (as in barricuda.)  We took a short drive down to Marineland, steeped in history since first opening in 1937. We experienced as a family our first time feeding and petting a dolphin. We also saw Nellie, the world’s oldest dolphin in human care, who celebrated her 56th birthday today earlier this year. We also spent an afternoon visiting the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, which as 23 species of crocodilian on display. The girls were thrilled to pet a python during an afternoon session and I even braved petting the snake. The Alligator Farm is set up like a traditional zoo and is beautifully landscaped, not to mention shady, so it’s a nice respite from the heat if you need to take a break from the beach or pool. We were also impressed that a film crew from the National Geographic cable TV station was on the grounds taping an upcoming special.

One of the more pleasant surprises of our trip came on the last full day when we decided to take a break from the heat and tour The Lightner Museum, in the heart of downtown St. Augustine.I questioned whether two little girls under the age of 8 would enjoy a museum with Tiffany lamps, but there were plenty of things to hold their interest, not to mention my 7-year-old enjoyed completing the treasure hunt worksheet given to her as we entered the museum, which was once known as the Hotel Alcazar, built in 1837. The grounds and gardens are breathtaking.

Lunch on our departure day was at Aqua Grill in Ponte Vedra, a great spot popular with locals and with many celebrities in town for the TPC Sawgrass or the ATP Tour. It has a unique combination of a very casual sports bar atmosphere where kids are welcome at the bar but the menu features some of the best seafood around – elegant gourmet food with a laid-back vibe. Try the Aqua Grill Rockefeller as an appetizer. We took the scenic route back to Jacksonville International Airport, boarding the ferry in Mayport for a slow and pleasant cruise across the St. John’s and then a drive that took us through Amelia Island, a low-key resort area with plenty of natural marsh land and untouched expanses along the intracoastal.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of St. Augustine Beach, so there are events planned throughout the year in celebration. It’s a great family vacation destination area and one trip we will always remember.

Disclosure: Our accommodations at the Renaissance Resort at the World Golf Village were provided by the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors & Convention Bureau, however we paid for our airfare, car rental, and dining.

They See London, They See France

Summer vacation is nearly half way over for my 7-year-old (how the heck did that happen?) and we’ve already entered the “I’m bored phase.” Our summer trip to St. Augustine beach is complete and the sand is now out of our flip flops. So what’s a kid with wander lust to do when her mother runs out of ideas?

Little Debbie 100 Calories Of Goodness Giveaway

Be sure to stop by Monday, June 29, for a new giveaway for a $50 gift card to Applied Labels, which makes great durable, waterproof, dishwasher safe labels for kids’ belongings and baby bottles. Mondays are giveaway days at Savvy Housewife.

When Little Debbie e-mailed me asking me if I’d like to try their new 100-calorie snack cakes it took me all of about 1.2 seconds to say yes.

She’s a temptress, not to mention she’s a Tennessee girl like me.

All kidding aside, I’ve always been a sucker for Little Debbie Nutty Bars (please…no bad jokes) and since I am fighting the uphill battle of losing 10 pounds of baby weight (and my “baby” is 4 years old) I thought it wouldn’t hurt. I come from a long line of Southern women with a major hankering for sugar. Little Debbie also offers 100-calorie chocolate cakes. And who can resist chocolate cake?

Little Debbie’s new 100-calorie snacks features two new flavors in addition to chocolate and yellow cake: lemon and cookies & creme. The little lemon cakes are my favorite, while cookies & creme are my 7-year-old’s favorite. The 4-year-old seems ambivalent. I don’t know what her problem is. The only thing I don’t love about the 100-calorie snack cakes is their size. They are tiny, but they are the perfect size to toss into a lunch box. And with only 100 calories, you won’t feel guilty cheating on your diet with a Little Debbie, no pun intended.

cookiecreme_sm

Little Debbie has a full line of 100 calorie snacks. I tried the 100 calorie Nutty Bars at the Blissdom conference here in Nashville earlier this year and they were awesome. Nutty Bars and me? We go way back. Plus lucky for me one of my two girls does not like peanut butter so that just means more Nutty Bars for me. Mwaa ha ha ha.

Want to win three boxes of Little Debbie’s new 100-calorie snack cakes? Simply leave a comment about your favorite Little Debbie snack item. For an extra entry, I’d so appreciate a  vote for my main blog, Blonde Mom Blog, for best local Nashville blog at Nick’s Parents Connect, but do leave an extra comment at this post telling me you’ve done so. A random winner will be chosen from all eligible comments left by midnight Sunday, June 28 (U.S. addresses only.) Thanks and good luck!

Last Minute Gift Ideas For Digital Dads

A PR representative with Energizer contacted earlier in the week about reviewing some new portable power items that would be great gift ideas for Father’s Day.

The new Energizer 15-Minute Charger is pretty darn cool. We just took our old battery charger on vacation to Florida which only has a wall outlet capability, so this new 15-Minute Charger from Energizer will now be on our “must pack” list. Here are a few details:

  • Charges one to four AA or AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries simultaneously in 15 minutes
  • Charges from a power outlet in your car or AC wall outlet
  • Compact, lightweight design
  • Energizer Rechargeable AA 2450 mAh batteries provide long-lasting rechargeable battery power
  • Hold a charge for up to 6 months
  • ENERGY STAR® certified
  • Comes with two AA and two AAA Energizer Rechargeable Batteries and a car adapter

energizer-chargerThe 15-Minute Charger from Energizer retails for $32.99.

Energizer’s second new product for digital dads (and moms) is a new portable power pack for cell phones and Blackberries called Energi to Go. An iPhone charger is set to be released later this summer (hurrah!) My husband is a Blackberry guy and he’s excited about using this product. I’m looking forward to trying out the iPhone portable charger because as much as I love my iPhone, the battery runs down by early evening and it can be incredibly frustrating.

The Energizer Energi To Go phone power pack is charged by two Energizer® Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. For maximum talk time, it’s recommended that you use two AA Energizer® Ultimate Lithium batteries for up to:

  • 250 additional talk time minutes in Palm and Samsung smart phones.
  • 235 additional talk time minutes in Blackberry and Motorola smart phones

Energizer’s Energi To Go product has a suggested retail price of $19.99, and includes the reusable charger, the phone tip connectors and two Energizer® Ultimate Lithium AA batteries.

Proactiv Skincare Review June

Even though I’m 39, my skin often breaks out occasionally like I’m still 19. Sadly the rest of my body has not gotten the memo to hang on to the teen years.

I’ve always heard a lot about the Proactiv skincare system so I was anxious to give it a try when they asked me if I’d like to test it. Proactiv gets a ton of celebrity endorsements so I was eager to find out what all the fuss was about.

I’m going to mention the word blackheads in a moment, so if you’re eating, well you may want to stop now. Just trying to keep it real here, folks.

proactiv

Here’s a breakdown of the products I received:

  • Renewing Cleanser: Gentle oil-free product with exfoliation beads that helped my skin feel very clean. Contains Benzoyl Peroxide but wasn’t drying. Again, the exfoliation factor was my favorite as I tend to get blackheads in the corners around my nose. This helped “buff” them out.
  • Revitalizing Toner:Refreshing, alcohol-free toner that helps remove excess oil; contains soothing botanicals gently balance skin tone which is a biggie for me since I tend to have “blotchy” skin.
  • Repairing Lotion:At my age I have to laugh a little at the term “repairing” because at nearly 40 I typically associate that with products that fight wrinkles. However this repairing lotion is a light, oil-free skin-clearing lotion with benzoyl peroxide lotion designed to help heal acne and prevent new blemishes.
  • Green Tea Moisturizer:Lightweight moisturizer which works well underneath makeup. I liked this, however I prefer a daily moisturizer with more oomph and a built-in SPF. Proactiv does carry an SPF 15 moisturizer, but it did not come with my test kit.
  • Refining Mask: Great basic mask to help clear up your skin.

Overall I think Proactiv helped clear up my acne flare up areas, especially with the blackhead prone zone around my nose and chin. The cleanser, toner, and repairing lotion were my three favorite products and you can actually buy those products as a package for $39.95 (plus you get a bonus travel pack if you order now). If you want to try out the entire 5-piece system, it’s only $20 more, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

I only used the Repairing Lotion once a day (before bedtime) because I feared it might dry my skin out. But it never did so I was pleased. Thankfully I wasn’t suffering from major breakouts, but it did help clear up my breakouts that I tend to get during my period.

Proactiv also has an excellent Clear Skin Guarantee: If you’re not totally satisfied with the results, simply return the bottles within 60 days, even if they’re empty, for a complete refund of the purchase price (less shipping and handling).

I’m getting ready to try out Cindy Crawford’s new age maintenance skincare line, Meaningful Beauty, brought by the same company behind Proactiv. I’ll be 40 in August so I’m anxious to try it out!

Animal Planet Brings Emergency Vets To DS

My 7-year-old is a huge Animal Planet fan and pretty much all of her career aspirations revolve around caring for animals so I knew she would love playing Animal Planet Emergency Vets on her Nintendo DS. It’s a great game for any child who is crazy about animals. Plus there’s no dog hair to worry about! And trust me. We know dog hair at our house.

animal-planet-ds-game

I think one of the funniest games involves getting rid of fleas on the dogs. My daughter also enjoys “bathing” the animals.

She’s going into second grade this fall and this game is perfect for her age level and very engaging.

Animal Planet Emergency Vets features:

  • 15 vet mini-games: memory games, puzzle games, matching games, dexterity and action games
  • 30 different animal species to care for and interact with from dogs, cats, horses to birds, rabbits and ferrets
  • Real talent from the TV series provides guidance and instruction to the player
  • Facts and Did you know questions from the Animal Planet channel

Animal Planet Emergency Vets for Nintendo DS from Activision is on sale now at Amazon for just $17.99. It would make a perfect gift for the young aspiring vet!

Bed Bugs, And Dust Mites, And Pet Dander, Oh My!

My husband suffers from terrible seasonal and household allergies. You name it and he’s probably allergic to it (although thankfully for our two dogs the one thing he is not allergic to is pet dander.) He underwent testing at a local allergy clinic last year and found out that he is especially allergic to dust and mold.

I recently participated in a conference call with allergen expert Dr. Clifford Bassett from Aller-Ease, the No. 1 best-selling brand of protective bedding for allergy and asthma sufferers. Aller-Ease makes a wide range of products such as pillow protectors and zippered mattress protectors. One of the recommendations of my husband’s allergy doctor was to use products such as these so I was happy to try out some of Aller-Ease’s more popular products.

aller-ease

Pillows, especially, can be a breeding ground for all sorts of nasty bed fellows. Aller-Ease carries a full line of pillow protectors and these were my favorite products. Aller-Ease features pillow covers in cotton and microfiber. I prefer cotton, which comes with a microscopic particle barrier, pollen barrier, and pet dander barrier, which is important to me since our large male dog sleeps on the floor in our bedroom.

Products like these are difficult to guage as far as total effectiveness, but I think when combined with other proactive measures around the house (such as laundering your bed sheets in hot water), they provide extra protection against triggers for allergy and asthma sufferers as well as peace of mind. The average bed can contain up to 10 million dust mites and mattresses can double in weight every 10 years due to microscopic allergens that accumulate inside.  Now that’s enough to make you have nightmares.

Aller-Ease products are sold nationwide at many retailers, such as Kmart, Sears, WalMart, and Bed, Bath & Beyod.

Here’s a helpful Q&A with Dr. Bassett with commonly asked questions concerning allergies.

Lulla-Bear, Baby’s First MP3 Player

When my daughters were babies they loved to chill out to white noise. For a short while the stove fan in our kitchen never failed to lull my youngest asleep as a baby so she spent a lot of time napping in her bouncy seat while I worked in the kitchen.

I don’t review many infant or baby products, but with so many of my co-workers having babies this year I was happy to review the Lulla-Bear, a sweet stuffed toy bear that is an MP3 Music Player featuring clear digital sound. This would make a great baby registry item; I wish we’d had something like this for our girls!

lulla-bear

The Lulla-Bear comes pre-loaded witih 90 minutes of baby friendly music, lullabies and play songs, as well as nature sounds, which is my personal favorite. The soft buttons on his feet are easy to push and he runs on 3 AA batteries (which are included.)  I love the fact that the Lulla-Bear grows with your child as you can customize him with your child’s favorite songs and stories. You just plug the Lulla-Bear in to your computer with the provided USB cable and download your own audio files; no extra software is required. So if  you’re baby is a rocker, you could download a little Led Zeppelin. (You could…not saying you should.) You could even record yourself reading your child’s favorite bedtime stories.

Lulla-Bear sports a cute red plaid bow. At my all girl household we’re all about the pink so I wish he came in a boy and a girl version. Still, I think he’d make a great baby gift.

Lulla-Bear is available on Amazon for $49.99.
